Water resistance

OELCHECK test instrument: glass strips
Sample quantity: approx. 1 g
Unit: none
Test result: resistance of the lubricating grease to water
Analysis for: lubricating greases
Brief description: For the test, a thin strip of grease is placed on a glass strip using a template. The glass strip is dipped up to 80% in a test tube with water. The sealed test tube is then placed in a heating cabinet for 3 hours at 40 °C or 90 °C. Once this time has passed, the glass strip is removed and checked for changes with a visual inspection. The corresponding evaluation level is determined according to the table.

Evaluation stages:
0 = no change to 3 = major change.
Statement: Although it is easier to seal lubrication points with greases than oils, the grease should be resistant to water. The test provides information on whether the grease absorbs moisture when kept in water. In this case the layer of grease turns a murky or milky colour or dissolves from the glass strip in its entirety. If the water runs off the layer of grease, the grease can be considered water-resistant.

Information about water resistance
  • The grease can emulsify water. There is a risk of corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement when this happens.
  • The grease repels water and therefore provides a seal against splash water.
Underlying test standard: DIN 51807-1
